There's even four-wheel drive, meaning you can confidently take you and a bunch of your friends overlanding without fear of getting stuck, so long as you know what you're doing.

The Chevrolet Suburban is for those who somehow think the Tahoe just isn't big enough for their needs. It's the same vehicle inside and out, except with even more length, meaning more leg room and storage space.

The Suburban is essentially just a small building on wheels, and like the Tahoe it can seat up to nine people. Towing boats, campers, or even other cars is a non-issue for the Suburban, even with the base V-8. There's a bigger V-8 and a turbo straight-six diesel available too, if you want even more oomph.

Price: $37,355

The Kia Telluride is the perfect blend of stylish, usable, and affordable, delivering plenty of space for occupants without breaking the bank.

The pleasantries extend to the cabin, where you get a nice space with plenty of useful features and new tech. Under the hood you'll find a naturally aspirated V-6 making nearly 300 hp, good enough to launch the Telluride to 60 mph in just 6.7 seconds. Front-wheel drive is standard, though you can option AWD for an additional $2000.

Price: $37,735

The Hyundai Palisade uses much of the same underpinnings you'll find in the Telluride, reskinned to better match Hyundai's corporate design. You get many of the same features, including the 291-hp 3.8-liter V-6 and eight-speed automatic transmission.

If you want all eight seats, you'll have to stay away from the top-level Limited and Calligraphy trims, as those both get captain's chairs for the second row, cutting seating capacity to seven. We also recommend going for the optional power-folding second- and third- row seats, as they make access and storage far simpler.

Price: $40,970

The CX-90 is Mazda's attempt to point itself upmarket, aiming to take away customers from real luxury brands like BMW and Audi. There's a longitudinal engine layout, standard AWD and plenty of high-quality materials inside.

The base engine is a new turbocharged inline-six making over 300 hp. Mazda also offers a plug-in hybrid that pairs a four-cylinder to an electric motor, with up to 25 miles of purely electric driving range on tap, according to the EPA.

As far as practical transportation goes, you can't do much better than the Toyota Highlander. The mid-size three-row isn't particularly outstanding in any facet, but does a fine job at delivering a relaxed, uneventful driving experience for up to eight occupants. Plus, it's hard to beat Toyota's reputation for reliability.

We suggest going for the optional hybrid powertrain. It makes nearly as much power as the pure turbocharged gas-powered Highlander, and it's way more efficient. Just be warned: the Highlander hybrid gets matched to a CVT, while the gas-powered Highlander still uses a more traditional eight-speed auto.

The Toyota Grand Highlander doesn't get its name from extra luxury appointments, but rather from its stretched wheelbase over the normal Highlander SUV. It's the vehicle for those who want a Highlander but plan to use the third row regularly, rather than just occasionally.

Toyota offers the Grand Highlander with three powertrain choices, the most impressive being the Hybrid Max system, which pairs a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four to an electric motor for a total of 362 hp. That's enough to send the SUV to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds.

The GMC Yukon and the Yukon XL use the same architecture as the Tahoe and the Suburban, sporting different fascias with more chrome and different badges. There's also a different interior and, depending on the trim you go for, better materials and more luxury features.

Go for the top-level Denali Ultimate trim, and you get some seriously nice 16-way power-adjustable massaging front seats, a Bose stereo system with 18 speakers, and fancy open-pore wood trim. There's also exclusive dark exterior trim and 22-inch wheels.

The Chevy Traverse is the perfect person-carrier for those who want something American but don't want to deal with the size or pricing of the bigger Tahoe and Suburban.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer takes the bones of the regular Wagoneer and spruces them up with higher-quality materials inside and out, including flashy chrome trim and nice supple leather upholstery.

The Grand Wagoneer also gets a new "Hurricane" twin-turbo straight-six making 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. Those who absolutely need eight cylinders in their big people-carrier can have one, of course, as the Grand Wagoneer also offers a 6.4-liter naturally aspirated V-8 making 471 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque.

The Lincoln Navigator is Ford's ultimate luxury experience, delivering a limo-like ride for up to eight people. Like the Expedition it's based on, the Navigator only has one choice of powertrain: A twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 making 440 hp.

The Nissan Pathfinder represents an affordable and more modern alternative to the company's bigger Armada, with enough seating for eight people and standard V-6 power.

The CVT in the last-gen Pathfinder has been dropped of a more traditional nine-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, but we'd recommend optioning the available all-wheel drive as it also adds a set of drive modes, including things like Sand and Mud/Rut modes for tackling tougher terrain.
